What changes when a Bitcoin service brings back an older security setup that some users had come to rely on?

Blockstream said on Oct. 13, 2026 that multisig accounts are back in its Blockstream app, with two-key and two-of-three options for Bitcoin. NFA.

How the accounts work

Users can create a two-key 2FA Protected account, or a two-of-three account for Bitcoin that adds a backup key only the user holds. A 2FA Protected account pairs a device key secured by PIN with a key on Blockstream's servers secured by two-factor authentication. Users sign off on sends with an authenticator app, email, SMS or a phone call.

Each deposit starts a timelock, after which the device key alone can spend it. An open-source tool aids recovery. The two-of-three account's 2FA never expires, and the backup phrase plus device key can recover funds at once.

What stays the same

Both account types work on Bitcoin, while the two-of-three option is not yet on Liquid. Holders of legacy multisig accounts see no change and face no migration. Users can keep their own key on a Blockstream Jade, which pairs with the app.

Next steps for readers

Check the Blockstream blog post from Oct. 13, 2026 for full details on setup. Visit the multisig page on the Blockstream site to review the two account types side by side. Test a small deposit first if you want to try the new options in the app.

Blockstream plans to build recovery-tool features directly into the app. That work is listed as upcoming, not live yet.

Why this matters now

The return gives Bitcoin users inside the app a choice between server-assisted 2FA and a self-held backup key. The choice sits inside one app rather than requiring separate tools. Legacy users keep their current setup without any extra steps.

Read the official post and the multisig page before deciding which account type fits your needs. Start small when moving funds to test the flow yourself.

The update keeps the focus on Bitcoin. Liquid support for the two-of-three option remains a plan rather than a current feature. Users who want to stay with existing multisig setups can continue without changes.

Look at the Blockstream Jade pairing option if you already own the hardware device. It works with the restored accounts in the app. Review the open-source recovery tool if you prefer an external option for now.

Blockstream stated that Blockstream cannot move funds alone under the multisig setup. That detail appears on the multisig page. Confirm the current status on the site before creating a new account.
